Today the Cubs agree to a one year deal with right handed pitcher Scott Baker per cbs chicago. Baker gets a one year deal from the Cubs worth $5.5 million and could earn another $1.5 million in perormance bonuses. the last seven season Baker placed for the Twins and during that time he posted a 63-48 record with a 4.15 era. The Twins declined Bakers $9.25 million option on Baker when the season ended making him a free agent. One reason the Twins didn’t pick up the option is becasue is coming off Tommy John surgey before he had the surgey Baker was 8-6 with a 3.14 era. Theo Epstein told mlb.com “If things go perfectly, he’ll be stretched out to five or six innings for that first week of the season.” Scott Baker said talked about why he picked chicago, Baker said “I wanted somewhere where my family could enjoy and we could have a lot of fun and I could help the team be productive.”
The Cubs made it clear this off season that they want starters and more then just one. Bleacher Nation is reporting he believes that with Baker coming off Tommy John look for the Cubs to now sign three starters so the Cubs don’t have to push Scott Baker back faster then need be. The other nice thing about the deal that Scott signed with the Cubs is he can moved at the trade deadline for younger players. This is a move more to fill a need and be a bridge untill the Cubs can sign big name players and be in the running for the playoffs. This is just the first of many moves the Cubs will hope to make this offseason.
